I Never Wanted To Be Your Model of Perfection.

 Every Wednesday, I used to look forward to watching America's Next Top Model (which just finished cycle 16).  One thing I discovered from watching that show was how little "prettiness" is worth. Even in the fashion world, probably the most materialistic world there is, looks aren't everything. There are many tall girls with pretty faces, but the ones who become models must have something more than looks. They must have character, smarts, creativity, and inner strength in order to take good pictures,maintain good repor with photographers, and, take the loads of criticism and demands that come with the industry. Today, most top models aren't traditionally pretty, uniqueness is in vogue

Another thing, I found interesting is that the model's main purpose is not to show what women look like, or , should look like. Their purpose is to sell clothes, cosmetics, jewelry, shoes, perfumes, etc. Models are tools of advertising. On America's Next Top Model, the girls who stay around are not the best-looking girls. The girls that stay around take pictures that can sell products. But, the definition of  the noun model is "One serving as an example to be imitated or compared",so, it only makes since that "models" are seen as the expectation of women. In French, a model is called "le mannequin", which, I think better describes their job than the word "model". I believe that if the fashion industry emphasized the fact that models are more walking mannequins, than "models",  people would have a more realistic view. Less girls would feel pressure  to look like models, and, the fashion industry would have less negative hype. Also, the message of fashion would be better appreciated. Fashion is about the unique, creativity, art, the world, and culture.
 One of my favorite models is Carla Bruni. She comes off as very sweet, down-to-earth, and modest. Bruni always seems at peace. Her music is the same: unassuming, sweet and peaceful. My favorite of her songs, is Quelqu' unn m'a dit. Which means someone said to me.(Lyrics in French and English Here)Enjoy its such a cute sweet video. :)

A Citygirl's Quest for Cosmic Love and Fashion

Today in French class, I was slightly bored. So I started mentally drifting into the subject of astronomy.. Two or so months ago, some friends and I went to the Griffith Observatory. On the Saturday closest to the half-moon, the Los Angeles Astronomical Society and the Los Angeles Sidewalk Astronomers get together at the Griffith Observatory for Public Star Parties. They bring telescopes, charts, diagrams, and models and at night it looks quite surreal. But what is really ethereal is what you see through the telescopes. I got to see a real close-up of the moon, Jupiter, Saturn, different colored stars, and three new born stars. The three new born stars took my breath away. There was a slightly bluish haze of light ,and in the corner was three tiniest specks of light real close to each other. I felt like I was looking in on the most marvelous secret.

The astronomers there are really passionate about their science. All they need is a listening ear. Some people were sort of avoiding them (honestly they can talk for hours without end), but those people were missing out. I learned so much about how stars are born, the positions and names of the stars, all the different planets, and the locations of the constellations. I wish I had brought a notebook, since I would have loved to write down all the different mythical legends behind the constellations.. Did you know that it takes eight minutes to see the light of the sun? When you look at the stars, you are seeing what they looked like hours or even days ago. Some stars we see don’t even exist anymore. Astronomy in a way is a way of looking into the past. After my visit, I was inspired to start putting some money away so I can buy a telescope and some land in the middle of nowhere.

             

   Speaking of the Cosmos, I’m reminded of my favorite song from Florence  and the Machine, Cosmic Love. I love the harp in the song and how dreamy and mystic it sounds. I can relate to the lyrics somewhat too. I especially adore the music video, actually, it’s my favorite music video of all time. Its so beautiful when she takes the star out of her shirt, she lets it go and it twinkles in the little light bulb. It’s one of those music videos that captures the feel of the song, instead of the lyrics of the song, for that I heart it.

      I hope to do a little shopping soon, since I have a tiny money bundle saved up. Sometimes to make the shopping experience even more fun, I make a collage of pictures from the Internet and my teen vogue magazines of what I want to look for… I'm currently working on one ill call “Cosmic Love in the City.” The idea is romantic, starry, but modern pieces. Nooo, Emmaspicnic is not now a Fashion Blog..Just, t was a nice day outside,and I happened enjoying it with a photographer who was taking pictures of random things.At the time  I also was thinking of some outfit ideas for some get-togethers coming up.So a brilliant idea popped in my head..."I should take pictures of my outfit ideas,yeah Its alittle off what I normally do for posts  but Emmaspicnic is meant to be a very eclectic blog..(i said i would in a post anyways) So I got out all my clothes,I bribed the photographer and we  had our own minature photshoot.. The photographer was "alittle" hyper, so i didn't do very many outfits, but it was funn..


While doing the "photoshoot" I was thinking about that fashionale vs. Stylish post( my first for Emmaspicnic.)and the new Teen Vogue  I got through the mail. Its funny but sometimes on the cover of TV itll say something like "stylish clothes for every budget", and I look inside and what they call low budget, is for me, a crazy high budget. " Noo, im not going to spend a month and a half's allowance on a cardigan when theres concert tickets to be bought". You know what I mean???..I get compliments on my outfits  all the time, esp. at school, and no piece of clothing I wear is over 35 dollars. Actually most of my clothes are well under 35, jeans  skirts, and dresses,jackets and sweaters are the only things im willing to spend anywhere close to forty dollars on, and even then it has to be uuber cutee. Its not that hard either to find cheap, good quality stuff. Always shop winter and summer sales. Summer sales are the best since all the lacey, floral,velvety, satin, tulle stuff is supposedly"off season" You can get ridik deals if you are into lace,velvet,satin, and tulle like I am.Internet shops also have lovely sales and low shipping during the Winter time. As I said in the F vs. S post, you can save loads of money, and confusion if you have a clearly defined style .


  For three or four days, Im doing a very strict technology diet. Theres a huge pile of books that  I have been meaning to read for the longest time, theres is also a very neglected piano,bike , foreign/vintage films that want watching and etc..... So until Tuesday or soo,,Salut, ma amies..(if any of you guys take french, I know the grammar in that "sentence" wasn't correct, but whatev you get the idea.. =) many hugs and warm feelings)
